Using Light Blue, cast on 144 (156, 168, 180) stitches, place stitch marker, and join for working in the round. Work *k1, p1* ribbing for 1.25 inches.

All sizes:

Knit one round in white yarn. Then work rounds 2-11 of chart (which repeats across the round) for a total of 4 times. At this point, your hat should be approx. 6 inches from cast on. If you would like a longer/slouchier hat, work more repeats of rounds 2-11 here as desired. If you are satisfied with the length, work rounds 12-20 of the chart to prepare for the crown shaping.

DIY Yarn Wrapped Word

DIY Yarn Wrapped Word Tutorial | Hobium International

The holidays are a great time of year to pause and find a word that sums up how you want to feel, or a word that is meaningful to you. Want to make that word especially personal? You can’t top having a yarn wrapped word in your own handwriting, customized in any colors you like! We like a bit of sparkle that the Kartopu Galaxy yarn gives this project, too. Here’s exactly how to accomplish this beautiful and easy craft.

Materials:

Scissors or sharp craft knife
Pen or Pencil
Cardboard box
DIY Yarn Wrapped Word Tutorial | Hobium International
Step 1:
DIY Yarn Wrapped Word Tutorial | Hobium International

Take a big piece of cardboard, and sketch out the word that you want to use. You won’t be able to see anything on the cardboard once you are done, so don’t worry about how perfect your pen strokes are.  It’s important that you handwrite it so that all the letters are connected, keeping it a solid piece once it is cut out. Try to keep the word balanced, and the letters all about the same size. The size of the cardboard will limit how big your word is – this example is 20 inches long, and the center letters are about 4 inches high.

Step 2:

DIY Yarn Wrapped Word Tutorial | Hobium International

Once you are happy with how your word looks, cut it out. You can use scissors or a craft knife – you might find it easier to cut out the center of the letters with a craft knife. If you accidentally cut through the cardboard and sever your letters, don’t worry! You can tape them back together and hide the tape with the yarn.

Step 3:

DIY Yarn Wrapped Word Tutorial | Hobium International

Once your word is cut out, using the Zambak and Galaxy yarns held together throughout, begin wrapping the letters. You will find it easier to wrap all along the bottom of the word first, so that you don’t have to cut the yarns while working with them.

Then, cutting lengths of the yarn (all the while holding both yarns together so that you get the thick white yarn covering the cardboard and the thin sparkly silver adding that special magic touch), wrap the yarns around the letters that require you to go through the center of the letters.

Step 4:

Weave in the ends at the back of your word using a blunt tapestry needle.

That’s it! During the holidays, it can look lovely as part of your tree or mantle display:

This craft idea is something that you can really infuse with your own taste and personality, and can have a lot of applications. Other ideas for yarn wrapped words:

  • A new baby’s name for a nursery
  • Your family’s surname
  • A word that you find meaningful –  like breathe, love, peace
  • A sign for the holidays- black and orange yarn-wrapped Happy Halloween, green and red wrapped Merry Christmas, blue and silver for Happy Hannukah, etc.

Play around with it and have fun!  Like this tutorial? Pin it!

MC: main color

WS: wrong side of knitted fabric

Fingerless Mitt Pattern (make 2):

Row 3: In CC, *K1, sl1 wyif; repeat from * to end of row.

Row 4: In MC, purl.

Repeat these 4 rows 7 more times (total of 8 CC slipped stitch stripes).

Finish top of mitt by working Rows 8 – 4 of Waffle Check pattern. Bind off all stitches knitwise.

Finishing:

You will now have two flat squares. Block to measurements, approximately 7 inches tall and 7 inches wide. Not sure how to block a knit? Here’s a great guide.

Easy Striped Fingerless Mitts | Hobium International

Once they are dry, you will begin seaming them.  The long tails that you have from the cast on and cast off will likely be great for seaming. Turn the fabric so that the right side is facing in on itself and using one of your wool needles, begin seaming from the bottom cuff. You will be ‘lifting’ the small bars in the between stitches, alternating one from each side. If you need a more detailed guide, this is a good link to check out.

Easy Striped Fingerless Mitts | Hobium International

Important! Do not seam your mitts all the way. Measuring as you go, stop seaming when you are 2.5 inches from the cast off edge.

Easy Striped Fingerless Mitts | Hobium International

Then, using a tail from your cast off edge at the top, seam together the sides of the garter section only. This will leave a comfortable opening your thumb.

Weave in all yarn ends. This means to ‘hide’ them on the wrong side of the knitting so that they won’t poke out of your mitts.

Enjoy your beautiful new fingerless mitts! We hope you love knitting these. If you make a pair, be sure to tag us on Facebook, or on Instagram using the hashtags #lovehobium and #hobiuminternational!
